Therapies

Shirovasti

Shirovasthi is considered the king of all Ayurveda therapies. Experience and results suggest that re-myelination, neurogenesis, and reorganization, and thereby the reversal of disease and symptoms, occur during this treatment procedure. However, Shirovasthi, although explained in all classical texts of Ayurveda, was not practiced extensively due to the complexity of the procedure. In the past, the scalp hair of the patient had to be shaved to perform this procedure without oil leakage. Additionally, this procedure was advised to be done for no more than 11 days. Notably, this highly effective yet abandoned therapy was revived in my family decades ago. We developed a new method of performing Shirovasthi without shaving the scalp hair. Moreover, we created a recipe for the oil that allows this therapy to be carried out continuously for 50 or more days. According to Ayurveda, the central nervous system controls the entire human body. This is particularly true in the case of Multiple Sclerosis (MS), where only through the correction of the brain and spine can MS be controlled, stopped, or improved. It is important to note that the recipe and concentration of the ingredients in the oil are the most critical elements. For this reason, the commonly available medicated oils in the market may not produce the same results. These oils need to be concentrated to the extent that 1 liter of sesame oil is concentrated with at least 5 liters of herbal extract. Imagine that the herbs needed to treat an MS patient require about 500-600 kg of herbs. Only such highly concentrated oils make a difference in your multiple sclerosis, not the procedure alone.

Rasa Shirodhara

Shirodhara with Rasa-
Shiro Dhara is a classical Ayurvedic therapy that involves the continuous pouring of a stream of warm oil, milk, buttermilk, or herbal decoctions onto the forehead, particularly on the “third eye” area. This treatment is known for its calming effects on the mind and body, and it is often used to relieve stress, anxiety, insomnia, and other conditions.

*Swarasa*, on the other hand, refers to fresh juice extracted from herbs, plants, or fruits. In the context of Ayurveda, Swarasa is used for its potent medicinal properties, often applied in various treatments to address specific health issues.

When Shiro Dhara is performed using Swarasa, the specific juice chosen would be based on the individual’s symptom with a therapeutic goal. This combination can be particularly beneficial for MS, leveraging the fresh, potent qualities of Swarasa for enhanced healing effects. The effect on cognitive decline, depression, coordination deficits are remarkable.

Kizhi

Kizhi is not been used as a primary treatment methodology for MS. However, it might be required to manage some pain related conditions of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems of certain patients for which this treatment is leveraged. Sometimes it will be accompanied with a massage to help the condition. Kizhi is essentially a poultice packed with various medicinal ingredients and heated in herbal oil. Normally kizhi massage is applied for the affected area or sometimes to the whole body as well. The carefully managed temperature of the poultice along with the other medicinal ingredients improves circulation and reduces body stiffness and pain. Obviously the choice of the ingredients is dependent upon the type of illness being addressed. Based on the type and ingredients used during the procedure, kizhi has been divided into multiple types such as :

  1. Navara Kizhi (Shashtika Pinda Sweda)
  2. Ela Kizhi (Patra Pinda Sweda)
  3. Naranga Kizhi (Jambeera Pinda Sweda)
  4. Podi Kizhi (Choorna Pinda Sweda)
  5.

Nasya

Nasya is a procedure in which herbal medicines are instilled through the nostrils. This treatment influences the central nervous system as well as provides local benefits. It helps in the symptomatic relief of neck tremors, vision disturbances, fatigue, and other minor issues. The local benefits include relief from chronic sinusitis, which can lead to upper respiratory infections.
